Retronaut: The past is stranger than you think

Retronaut is a compendious website that scavenges photos from the 19th century through to recent decades, demonstrating just how strange the past really is. Their motto – The past is a foreign country. This is your passport. – is inspired by the first line of L. P. Hartley’s 1953 novel, The Go-Between: The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Retronaut is divided into categories for ease of searching. Naturally, I went first to the WTF section of historical photos. Here’s a selection of six to whet your appetites. I urge you to visit the site.
